*Founded by an american dreamer
Los Mochis dates back to the end of the 19th century, when american Albert K. Owen attemped to create an american colony in the area.
Now it is the third most importat in the State of Sinaloa. Because of his location and it´s departing stations to Copper Canyon and beautiful villages and ports, Los Mochis has become a base for those visitors interested in this area.
The first pioneers led by Owen arrived from United States on Novemeber 10th, 1886 planning to establish a socialist new village in Topolobampo based in walfare and work.
They hoped that the colony's strategic location by the sea and a potential rail line would help the new community to prosper.
In spite of Owen's numerous effort over 16 years, the project ultimately was a failure due to differences among people.
Other americans, however, were successful in setting up lucrative business , like Benjamin F. Johnston who perfected the method of griding sugar cane. He started a sucesssul sugar company, which became, with time, the sorce of growth and developtment for a town that with time would become a modern city.
This sugar cane mill, commonly called by locals "compañía azucarera" is still operated at current times.
